Ok, new Who tonight. The thing that really fecking annoys me about new Who in general, and this episode in particular, is the whacked out pacing.
5 minute in and Lazarus is a monster already - what happened to backstory and development, instead of thrusting us into the drama as soon as the show started with us not knowing what was going on or why we should care, and then taking their sweet time walking down the church floor looking for him, or focusing on the ' you're not human any more' stuff.? ? !.
ok i get what it was trying to say, but sheesh. So many more engaging less rushed ways of telling that story. I was not impressed.
This needed to be a two parter at LEAST, to engage me - i wanted to know more about him as a person, about how he felt going into the machine, about how it felt to mutate, etc.
The whole plot seemed to jerk and stutter, as it stopped and started, it was weird, and not at all good. And the obligatory Saxon stuff thrown in for good measure, blah blah. Martha's family - I DONT GIVE A FLYING FUCK, okay?
However, the previews for 2 weeks' time and onwards look very good, and Dr John Smith looks to be a pretty good premise (having never read Human Nature, i cant say how true to story I think it will be, but oh well).
Looky, someone else agrees with me.

Re: pacing yes he got transformed pretty quick but in fairness he doesn't actually go all monster-y until 15 minutes in.

He could have become like the salt vampire in Trek TOS or something, you know, to suck the life out of people without going full scale CGI scorpiony...
*headdesk*
The whole thing just felt wrong to me, it just didnt sit well.
And i dont give a flying toss about Martha's mom, for god's sake. What happened to companions who left all that behind? We didnt have to keep nipping back to Alzarius every week, nor did we dip back to Traken, not that we could anyway... Grr.
Maybe i just have SandS on the brain and cant get past DECENT BLOODY STORYTELLING to appreciate new Who in all its CGI'ed 45 minute glory?

That gave me nightmares when I first saw it aged 6 or so. I wouldn't watch Star Trek again for years. Freaky horrible thing...
I liked Martha's sister; she's pretty cool. But the thing with her mum does feel a bit forced, like they just decided they need some conflict between her and the Doctor.

Aside from that, it was fine! ;D

The monster was bafflingly pointless, i agree. Even on rewatch.
