leoniedelt: dunno whose this is (sapphire steel logo mix)
Add MemoryShare This Entry
I finished the rest of the original assignments. I really liked the one at the train station, and the one about the virus. Not so sure about Lead in the first one, but of course I love Silver.

I take back what i said about Joanna Lumley being detached, but i think Susannah Harker's Sapphire is more emotional/involved. Lumley's a great actress though, taking very seriously what had to be difficult acting circumstances.

I also think Steel needs to be used better in the audios, and was used better in season 2 than season 1, but McCallum's Steel is superb. What a hard bastard he is.  Warner's is the one that sticks in my mind, of course, being my first Steel, but i will always see McCallum, even when I listen to Warner talk.

I think both the audios and the show are superb in every way, and such a contrast to New Who and such shows. And yet just as interesting and engaging, if not more so!

edited: I even made a S&S logo icon that's a mix of the old show's sapphire and steel ball thingys, and the new logo and Big Finish on it. Yay me. Totally gankable if anyone wants it.

never saw "Sapphire & Steel", though it does sound interesting. how are Big Finish's audios of that show, in terms of plot? similar to the tv show?

First season, very similar. Nursery rhymes and the first audio is set on a train. Lots of 'its ok to be gay' stuff in The Lighthouse and teenage suicide in 'Daisy Chain'. Lots of hot button issues, not sure i like how they handled some of them. Still enjoyed David Warner's voice though, mmm.

'All Fall Down' with Silver was *superb* and the 'School' was pretty damn good too.

Second season, they're finding their feet and branching out, able to do more different kinds of things within the limits of audio and the show's premise.

'Water Like a Stone' was ok, i guess. Cruel Immortality is *superb* and the ending a total surprise.

So, they're getting there, and really finding the characters. I think Warner's Steel is a bit less effective than McCallum's because Steel himself doesn't have a lot in terms of skills, whereas Sapphire has lots of things she can do, and in the audio format, its very limiting. Whereas McCallum would've grabbed someone by the arm and dragged them across the room, Warner just shouts a lot and is grumpy because you can't see him physically.

Harker's Sapphire is a lot more emotionally involved in the stories, and gentler/devoted towards Steel, almost as if she loves him.

Silver's a massive flirt, who after Assignment 6, i suspect is shagging both Sapphire and Steel :D The audios didnt change that either, he's still just as naughty.

That's all IMHO of course.

I do however, think Warner's Steel is more ruthless than McCallum's. I think Warner's Steel's been around long enough that he's prepared to do whatever it takes to sort the problem out, whereas McCallum had a slight soft touch sometimes.

That's also IMHO.

I always got that idea about Silver. There's always this tension between him and Steel because of the flirting over Sapphire. At first when I started watching Sapphire and Steel I thought that they would have made a cute couple, then Silver came in, and booooy did my mind change!
I'm waiting for my chance to snag a copy of 'All Fall Down', until then I have to be paitent and sit tight with Deva, Poul, Mawdryn, and televised Silver :D

I watched McCallum before I heard Warner in the audios, but even then, when I hear Warner speak I think of Warner from The Omen as Jennings! lol

Well you can probably tell I'm a MASSIVE Warner fan :D

If you need an upload of All Fall Down, let me know. Its brill. The last part ends up basically the Siler & Sapph show; Steel's down for the count :)

I'm quite sure Silver's shagging Sapph, and probably a bit of Steel on the side, yes. He's such a kinky bastard, isnt he :D

*highfivesyou*
Dude! I think I found my new best bud! lol
If you could upload it for me I would really appreciate it! If Steel's down for the count, I'm totally there to see Silver at play! I'm so relieved to find another Warner/Collings fan. I'm in a family that pretty much dispises anything british, so I get scoffed for my fixation of Warner, Collings, and even Paul Darrow!
I so agree with you about Silver and Sapphire, it's hard not to miss that! I have tons of screencaps that make me assume that they can't get their hands off eachother! lol If you need any pics, give me a hollar. I have pics of Collings from all kinds of things...even the obscure Look and Read part as Lord Dark lol

Iconlub, yes. Superb icon.

188mb .tar.gz, you'll need winrar to undo it i think. Unfortunate side effect of me being on linux instead of windows. Going up on megaupload now, but i may go to bed before it finishes :/

Yep, Steel's unconscious or muttering 'Maldeb' through pretty much the entire second disc from track 5 onwards, so from then on its the Sapphire and Silver show. And its a fine show at that. Silver's not so flirty, but really resourceful to get things done. I think they toned down the flirtiness because face it, David Collings doesnt sound as young as he used to, neither does David Warner.

I SWEAR i am convinced that the best actors in the world are named David. I have a running theory on this, and have been accumulating Davids to add to the list...

I thought I was the only one that noticed that!(perhaps if I have a kid I might have to name it David and see what happens lol)
I still think that even though David might be older, he's still huggibly cute! I mean, even after all this time, he's got great hair, and is terribly modest, what could be better?
I can't wait to hear this! Sapphire and Silver show sounds good to me! :D

Oh yes, i love his hair. I'd never realised how ginger it is until I watched S&S... modesty is a good thing, too.

Keep your eye peeled for my picspam. I'm doing that and then hitting the sack!

Coolness! Where should I find it?

His hair is gingery goodness, and a total blast to draw! Sometimes I think I draw too much David lol

I've not heard or seen it! I'm quite intrigued. Care to give me a quick insight into what it is?

I've never seen it either and only know about it from your posts! For quite a while I was under the impression it was that thing with Pierce Brosnon in, but that's Remington Steele...

Just gobsmacked anyone who's ever been to doctorwho.co.uk or bigfinish.com doesnt at least know about the audio series?

Most Who fans have at least heard of the BF version...

Yes, Brosnan was in Remington Steele, which is equally brilliant but severely overacted - Brosnan was as scenery munching as Tennant has ever been...

I had seen it on the BF site along with Tomorrow People and Bernice Summerfield and a few others, but tunnel vision searching-for-Petey-audios soul that I am I always just click straight on Doctor Who! ;)

I did too, also for Petey tunnel vision, for a long time. Then i developed David tunnel vision which intensified when i met Petey, and I snapped them all up, yes.

no worries :)

I've heard of it, and that there's some sort of supernatural-ness, but I didn't look more into it, which is a bit of a shame now... I'll be off to research right away!

If you like the time travel concepts in Who, you'll like Sapph and Steel even more. Its very cerebral, but effects are basic at the same time. Acting is top notch, and its claustrophibic, spooky, and brilliant, utterly brilliant.

Never been so scared of a torch beam in my LIFE.

Time travel totally confuses me, but I like it all the same. Some of the Who stuff, some of the HP sets my head spinning, but in a good way I think.

Sounds good, I'll start looking out for it! :)O

I dont 'do' HP, but that's mainly just because i'm awkward like that, and tend to lean away from things that everyone else is massively hysterical about. Hee :)

Plus Hp fandom is insane, or so i've heard?

I'm not part of the HP fandom as such, all the shipping wars scare and annoy me, and I could never ship the characters of a magical plot anyway ;P

I'm talking about a bit in book 3, with the time-turner? confuses me completely. and yes, it is completely insane.
I stay away, mostly for my own health.

I've not read any of the books and only saw the first movie - cant imagine shipping them, they're just kids!

I have read the books, but I just can't ship them. I've grown up with them, so I just... can't.
