Been re-watching this today. Have a new appreciation of David as Eli, especially when he held Chickie as he died, on the beach. I wanted to cry with him.
The shootout when rescuing Chickie, to the tune of the House of the Rising Sun - sheer brilliance.
"Small case of mood poisoning - must be something i hate." and the whole designated drowner bit before they drowned Eli, was superb.
The soapy elements of this annoyed me the first time around, but this time, i'm finding it a lot more engaging, yes.
And I confess to liking Jim Belushi's nose.

Wild Palms
Can you believe I have Wild Palms but haven't watched it yet? (He has so many films, I don't think I'll ever run out of David Warner stuff to watch.) But I'm putting that at the top of my list now. Thanks for the review! (The "House of the Rising Sun" with the awesom Eric Burdon on vocals? Oh my. If it is, I could go into sensory overload!!! This could be dangerous.)
Re: Wild Palms
But David's acting is superb, though he says a few things with a thoroughly Yank accent, thank god he'd mended that by being back in the UK! And Jim Belushi, you'd have thought was miscast, and a few things he sayd woodenly or possibly not relaly understanding what he was supposed to be doing, but he tries really hard.
I dislike Angie Dickinson and Kim Catrall, Angie is slimy (its her character, i think) and Kim just plays Valeris without the Vulcan ears. Still the technology is kindof like Lawnmower Man's warnings of doom and such, and its pretty damn cool i think. The messages about scientology and drug use are clear as a a bell.
I think i wrote most of this in my first review, when i was irritated by the soapier elements of it, but this time around, i found them intriguing.
And YES, David shoots a very automatic gun, blows up a bunch of people, carries his son (Brad Dourif) to the beach, and holds him while he dies. Its really quite beautiful if you ignore his son's daft name, Chickie Levitt.
I took my banner cap from the dinner he and Josie go to have in the bottom of an empty swimming pool, just because he gets up to kiss her.
